"THE WORD" AS SEEN IN
THE BOOK OF JOHN
Topical: John 1:1-18
The "Word" in John should no be mistaken for the "Word" in II Timothy 4:1-2.
Greek word: LOGOS.
Represented a power to the Greeks.
Example: Like KTDL represents a radio transmitter of 1000 watts.
Or, XERF represents 100,000 watts.
It is fundamental to study and understand the way LOGOS is used in this text.
Bear in mind that John is beginning his book cautiously.
He is setting forth a doctrine that is not easily understood, i.e., that Jesus is Deity (or God).
He makes this claim in 1:1-18, then sets out to prove his statement with the remainder of the book - (20:20-31).
Many of us would serve more diligently if we would strive to understand all that we could about our Jesus.
Today, let's see what John is saying to us about "The Word".
THE WORD AND DEITY - 1:1.
He is eternal - existed before the beginning.
Only God existed before time: Jesus Logos is God.
"The Word was WITH God and the Word WAS God..."
His own claims prove Him to be God:
2:16 - "My Father's house..." (Temple).
4:14 - claimed to be "life giving water".
4:25-26 - claimed to be the "Messiah".
5:17-18 - claimed God as His Father --- v. 18 - "Making Himself equal with God..."
5:24-29 - claimed ability to raise all of mankind at the end of time.
5:30-46 - claims proof of His Deity: v. 30 - Father; v. 33 - John the Baptist; v. 36 - Jesus' works; v. 39 - scriptures; v. 46 - Moses and the Law.
6:62 - claimed to have been with God in eternity past.
8:24 - said that He was the "I AM".
Other persons claims for Jesus' Deity:
3:12 - Nicodemus -- "teacher from God".
4:31 - John the Baptist -- "...He that cometh from above is above all..."
4:42 - Samaritans -- "Savior of the World..."
12:34 - Jews -- "Christ abideth forever..." (eternal).
One's conclusion MUST be that Jesus is Deity (GOD).
THE WORD AND CREATION - 1:2-3.
Genesis 1:1 - "In the beginning God created..."
Jesus was the creation power.
NOTE: This attests to the Deity of Christ.
THE WORD AND LIFE - 1:4-9.
Jesus is the life of man:
Came for this reason - John 3:16.
John 15:1-2 - life giving branch.
The life giving light exposes darkness - v. 5.
V. 6-8 - John the Baptist came to testify that Jesus was the light (Messiah).
Jesus is the guide for all man - v. 9.
THE WORD AND THE WORLD - 1:10.
He entered the framework of life to take an active part.
Again, Jesus is seen as the creator of the world.
Reflects that His appearance was like any other man's.
No halo; soft effeminate look, etc.
THE WORD AND MEN - 1:11-13.
Rejected by his own - Jews - v. 11.
Fulfillment of prophecy - Psalm 118:22 - "The stone which the builders rejected is become head of the corner."
Gave man the right to become sons - v. 12.
ONLY believers have the right.
THE WORD INCARNATE - 1:14.
Identifies the "Word" to be CHRIST.
"Word became flesh"
Emptied himself of His outward glory.
"Dwelt among us" -- Pitched his tent; lived with man.
His name is Immanuel - (God with us).
Jesus had to experience our realm in order to be our High Priest.
THE WORD REVEALING - 1:15-18.
Reveals fullness - v. 16.
God's plan brought to fullness - Galatians 4:4.
Reveals grace and truth - v. 17.
The law had no grace.
John 8:32 - "ye shall know the truth..."
Reveals the Father - v. 18.
Came to show us the Father.
Love, mercy, righteousness, justice, strength, compassion, power, etc.
What will you do with the Word?
Jesus has the power to create a world, don't you think He has the power to change your life and to give you strength to live each day?
Will you reject Jesus like the Jews did?
Jesus came to live among man that He might know the same problems that we have.
Jesus revealed what the Father is like, why do we think that God is different?
He will not tolerate SIN.
