WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?
Expository: Psalm 50
Habit is one of our strongest motivators.
When habit is our motivation in religion, we may be in trouble.
We will make a distinction between:
Ritualism - formalism.
Ritualism is more than a "bad disease" in the Church today, it is SIN.
We must work at removing this sin from our camp.
God has always hated Ritualism and has never wanted His people to engage in such
Today, I think it would be wise to study the 50th Psalm and try to get a grasp of
what God thinks about formalism or Ritualism.
THE JUDGE ARRIVES AND THE COURT IS CALLED TO ORDER - V. 1-6.
The Judge is announced - v. 1.
Three of God's names used.
El - Mighty One.
Elohim - God of Power (also plural).
Jehovah - Covenant name.
Note: God makes sure they understand the authority with which He speaks.
The Judge approaches the bench - v. 2-3.
Walks like a fire devouring a forest.
Tempest - pictures the clouds rolling before Him.
The setting of the judgment - v. 4-6.
Universal legislation - v. 4-5.
We have made a covenant with God. (Legislation includes us)
Universal declaration of a Just God - v. 6.
God must be seen in His might and power.
GOD'S JUDICIAL ADVICE TO THE FORMALIST - V. 7-15.
Routine without meaning is formalism, Ritualism.
We do things routinely - (formalism, ritualism, rut).
Prayers - not thought through.
Singing - words not understood.
Giving - because it is expected.
Lord's Supper - don't know why; just do it.
Preaching - no real aims.
We just go through the motions.
Ritualist, formalist are evidenced by "Sunday Morning" coming only.
"Why do you do what you do?"
God is not reproving because they are NOT sacrificing but because of HOW - v. 8.
God's attitude toward such formalistic worship - v. 9-11.
God owns everything.
God wants your heart - not your outward display.
When God has your hearts - He gets sacrifice.
Sacrifice is the external expression of the deep love in a man's heart.
God's needs are not fulfilled by man - v. 12-13.
When you offer, offer thanksgiving - v. 14-15.
God wants gratitude, not formalism.
Live up to the vows you make.
"Why do you do what you do?"
Must have a self-examination.
GOD'S JUDICIAL PRONOUNCEMENT UPON THE WICKED (HYPOCRITES) V. 16-20.
You have my covenant in your mouth but you don't have the right to even speak to anyone about me in your hypocrisy - v. 16.
God's church is full of these.
This is one reason many people will not get involved.
You hate to be corrected - v. 17.
Usually end up mad (angry).
You profess one thing and practice something else - v. 18-20.
God will perform justice - v. 21.
GOD'S CONCLUDING ADVICE - V. 22-23.
When we are ritualistic - we have forgotten God.
God will bring judgment.
There is worship that praises God - thanksgiving.
To receive salvation you must live consistent to God's way.
There are a number of you here that "Do what you do" out of pure habit.
You have marked yourselves and labeled yourselves for all of us to read.
Ritualistic and formalistic service to will cost you your eternal life.
It is SIN.
God despises it.
You know your own heart.
We know some of you.
YOU CAN BE SURE THAT GOD KNOWS YOUR REASONS.
