TRYING TO UNDERSTAND GOD'S WILL
One of the great quests of man is to know God's will.
This is only possible with daily guidance.
God's greatest quest is to reveal His will to us.
This is only possible after a deeper understanding and response to the ultimate will of God.
God's will is not a mysterious set of sealed orders which we stumble upon when we hit the "right formula."
God wants to reveal His will more than we want to receive it.
Finding God's will must be preceded by:
Praising Him for giving us a will.
Acknowledging His working in revealing His will.
In this lesson let's search out some things that will help us understand God's will for our lives.
WHAT IS HIS WILL?
Definition of terms.
BOULEMA - God's immutable, irrevocable will.
Acts 2:23,24 - "counsel;" Romans 9:19.
This does not require our co-operation.
This will accomplishes our salvation.
THELEMA - His desire for us to experience and live what he has revealed in Christ
to be His plan and purpose for all creation.
This is His strong will for us.
This requires our co-operation.
God calls us into this will.
We discover here a new set of desires.
His will is not a "rigid line" we walk, but a "liberating relationship." It is not "restrictions" He imposes, but a life of fellowship with Him.
God is not hiding, holding His will until we do or say all the right things to unlock His protective door.
Many people just exist. God gives abundant life.
THE HEART OF MAN.
Matthew 22:37-39 - Jesus' emphasis was the mind.
The mind - our inner thought and value system.
The port of entry into the heart.
Commander in Chief - GOD.
General - OUR THINKING.
Takes the strategy and works it out in specifics.
Lieutenant - OUR WILL.
Takes the orders - gets the job done by following orders.
The sinful nature cannot be in charge here.
Our basic purpose is to love God, but we don't when we don't use our endowments
to think, will and act in response to His love.
We are like a child in a tantrum -- will out of control. Turns inward instead of
outward to others.
God has endowed us with an inner mind, spirit and soul, which we were given to receive
His mind, respond to His Spirit and have our souls prepared for eternity.
WE HAVE THREE GREAT NEEDS:
An assurance that we belong to Christ and that He lives in us.
A total dependence on His shepherding care.
An unreserved commitment to live life to the fullest because we know that we are alive forever.
SURRENDER IS NECESSARY.
Nobody gives "success" away -- we need ambition.
But, after rebirth, we are not on our own.
We must learn to turn our struggles into "stepping stones."
Surrender gives us much.
Enlarged perception of possibilities.
Increased strength and insight.
Open doors to new solutions.
"The Lord will not cross the picket line of the will." - James Jauncy
The will is like a thermostat which, when opened by the warmth of His love, could
release the flow of obedient discipleship.
The prayer of the Kingdom people is to ask, seek and knock. Ask for the Lord's will,
seek what that is, and knock with boldness, knowing that the door of opportunity of
doing will be opened.
The will is the whole man active. I cannot give it up. I must exercise it. I must
will to obey.
God will only eveal as much as we are willing to act on today. More will come when
that is done.
THE CROSS AND OUR WILL.
The cross is the answer.
Hurt by someone.
Our life's work - WHAT IS IT?
It gives us power to do the Lord's will.
OBJECTIVE: Teach the lost - our central purpose.
Benevolence. GOD SUPPLIES THE POWER!
Baptism has a special purpose.
Old will crucified - new will resurrected.
II Cor. 5:17.
We sometimes take the wrong direction.
God takes our wrong turns and uses them to accomplish His will.
THE GREATEST SECRET TO DISCOVERING HIS WILL AND LIVING IN IT.
Quality life response - not some "step."
Praise - praise to God for all things - good and bad.
FIVE WAYS TO BE SURE YOU ARE IN GOD'S WILL.
Get in the Word - let it speak to you.
To possess your possessions.
Confession of sin.
Overcome self - realize your worth.
Partners in fellowship.
To know and understand God's will is a step toward maturity.
To know His will is to please the God who made us.
To know His will is to allow God to fulfill His strongest desire for every Christian; that is, to reveal His will.
