QUALITIES OF A CHRISTIAN SERIES A Study of Second Peter 1:5-9 PATIENCE Lesson Five of Eight
Patience is often understood as the ability to sit back and wait.
This is true in some cases, but is not the definition of the word used here.
The word MAKROTHUMIA carries the idea of "long-suffering." It is listed as one of the
qualities of the "Fruit of the Spirit" in Galatians 5. It means to be "long-tempered."
Let's look at patience in the context of II Peter 1:6 and see what we can gain from it.
Patience - endurance - HUPOMONE - an abiding under. (HUPO - under, MENO - to abide),
is almost invariable rendered "patience"; endurance.
SOME NEW TESTAMENT USES.
Grows in trials.
Ensures a crown of victory.
As enduring pressure.
II Timothy 3:10-11.
II Corinthians 6:4.
I Peter 2:20.
In doing good - Romans 2:7.
In fruit bearing - Luke 8:15.
In running the Christian race - Hebrews 12:1.
Patience perfects Christians character, James 1:4, and fellowship in the patience
of Christ is therefore the condition upon which believers are to be admitted to
reign with Him, 2 Tim. 2:12; Rev. 1:9. For this patience believers are strengthened
with all power, Col. 1:11, through His spirit in the inward man - Eph. 3:16. (Vine)
WHAT PATIENCE IS NOT.
It is not indifference.
It is not saying, "What will be, will be."
It is not weakness.
It is not avoiding or escaping the adversity.
EXAMPLES FROM NATURE THAT SHOW PATIENCE.
A small donkey burdened with a heavy load, quietly continuing on from place to place as his master wishes.
An ox or donkey as he walks hour after hour powering a treadmill pumping water or grinding grain to feed hungry people.
An ox hooked to a plow, plowing ahead in spite of the rocks, clay, hot sun, chilling winds in good ground or bad.
BENEFITS OF PATIENCE.
It generates hope and optimism in those around us.
Example: Philippians 1:12-14
Patience in God's people will allow the unbeliever to see the nature of God and His power to change lives.
It produces strength and endurance
A greater sense of stability.
Allows us to face and help others face even more difficult situations.
Allows us to see God at work.
He is faithful to help
PATIENCE IS LEARNED.
God has arranged events in our lives. WE must learn from what we experience.
Realize that when trouble comes... the fist thought should not be about it, but
that God is setting up a learning center in my life... What am I to learn?
