QUALITIES OF A CHRISTIAN SERIES A Study of Second Peter 1:5-9 KNOWLEDGE Lesson Three of Eight
Someone once said, "There can be no high attainment of Bible knowledge without mental perspiration."
Remember the introductory charge: "Make every effort to add to your faith..."
Add - to fit out completely the needed supplies.
Contextually, it is important to remember that the "false teachers" thrived on the word knowledge.
Knowledge - GNOSIS - from the word GINOSKO - "signifies to be taking in knowledge, to
come to know, recognize, understand, or to understand completely..." (Vine)
GNOSIS - "...'practical wisdom.' This is its customary meaning in the Greek ethical
language. Bengel has caught its meaning when he describes it as wisdom which
distinguishes the good from the bad, and shows the way of flight from bad. (cf.
Hebrews 5:14). This knowledge is gained in the practical exercise of goodness (the
virtue of which he has just been speaking), which in turn, leads to a fuller
knowledge of Christ (v. 8; cf. John 7:17)." (Green, P. 68)
"Knowledge is a clear understanding of a truth or fact; that which has been perceived
or grasped mentally; learning." (Leach, p. 83)
