QUALITIES OF A CHRISTIAN SERIES A Study of Second Peter 1:5-9 VIRTUE or (GOODNESS) Lesson Two of Eight
It must be noted before each of these qualities that they are to be built on top
of or added to our faith.
It is quite a task to add things to our lives because more often than not, it
demands a C-H-A-N-G-E in us.
In this lesson we will define this word goodness or virtue and see what it holds for us.
Virtue - ARETE - "Properly denotes whatever procures pre-eminent estimation for a person
or a thing; hence, intrinsic eminence, moral goodness, virtue..." (Vine, p. 1201)
It means "goodness, good quality of any kind, a gracious act of God, virtue, uprightness."
"As supplied to the Christian it denotes moral excellence. The Christian whose faith is
infused with moral excellence will reflect in his disposition and life something of the
distinctive character of his Lord..." (Kelcy, p. 122-123)
USES IN THE NEW TESTAMENT.
I Peter 2:9 - translated "praises."
II Peter 1:3 - translated "goodness."
"...here the original and general sense seems to be blended with the impression
made on others, i.e., renown, excellence or praise..." (Vine, p. 1201)
