THE MIRROR OF GOD'S WORD
Text: James 1:19-25.
As God's people, we must constantly examine ourselves that we might walk a pure life.
Examinations are very important:
People go to the doctor for preventive and corrective examinations.
Auto shops are for examining and correcting the problems of our automobiles.
Businesses take inventory or examinations frequently to determine progress or digression.
Teachers give examinations to find a student's progress.
Men need constant spiritual examinations.
Paul set forth an examination - II Corinthians 13:5. "Try yourselves, whether ye
are in the faith; prove your own selves..."
Today, let's look into the mirror of God's Word and try to get a true picture of
our faith, our view of the world and our love and loyalty for the church.
HOW DOES GOD'S MIRROR REFLECT OUR FAITH? IS IT ALIVE?
Faith and belief are used the same way in the Bible.
Faith in and of itself has never blessed a man.
Faith that saves is faith that obeys.
The devils believed and trembled - James 2:19.
This did not save them.
Mark 1:24 - unclean spirit - "I know thee, who thou art, the Holy One of God..."
Mark 2:11 - unclean spirit - "...fell down before Him and cried saying, Thou art the Son of God..."
Mark 5:6-7 - legion - "...what have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the Most High God..."
Abraham obeyed God - James 2:21-24.
Faith that God could fulfill His promises, even if he offered his only son.
Law of works and the legal system not under consideration here.
Rahab's faith led her to do something - James 2:25.
She had heard of God's power - Joshua 2:11.
Faith takes God at His word and obeys Him.
By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain." - Hebrews 11:4.
"By faith Noah prepared an ark..." - Hebrews 11:7.
Hezekiah - Isaiah 38:21-22.
Our faith is tested:
By the use of our tongue - James 2:1-12.
By helping others actively - James 2:14-17.
HOW DOES GOD'S MIRROR REFLECT CONCERNING OUR LOVE FOR THE WORLD?
World - KOSMOS - used as those alienated from God.
Notice a description of the world - Ephesians 2:1-3.
Dead - separated from God - v. 1.
Fulfills the desires of the flesh - v. 3.
Blind, follows its own God - v. 2.
I John 2:15-17.
We need only to seek God's kingdom - Matthew 6:33.
HOW DOES GOD'S MIRROR REFLECT OUR LOVE AND LOYALTY FOR THE CHURCH?
Christ loved the church.
Ephesians 5:25 - "...gave Himself up for it..."
Acts 20:28 - "...purchased with His own blood..."
We need to be loyal.
We should use God's mirror:
Daily - Psalm 1:1-2 - "...meditate day and night..."
Skillfully - II Timothy 2:15.
As Christians, we must use God's mirror.
We want to:
Have a strong and active faith.
Have a hatred for sin of the world.
Have love and loyalty for God's church.
