THE MAJESTY OF GOD Lesson Two of Nine THE WORLD AND THE UNIVERSE
The Majesty of God is seen in all areas of existence. In this study we will look at
several areas of God's creation.
The word "majesty" comes from the Greek word MEGA, which means "big."
The word majesty has taken on several new meanings throughout the years,
but we will address ourselves to the original meaning.
As we look at different areas of the world and the universe, we will begin to see just
how big God really is. We will not only deal with His size, but also His power and
knowledge. We will discover that the Majesty of God is unsearchable and awe-inspiring.
As Christians, we believe that all existence is the product of God's creation. However, we
often have difficulty understanding His relationship with creation. The Bible explains God
to us in human terms (hand of God, eye of God, etc.). As a result we tend to think of God as
having human limitations. We must remember that God is not human. He is Deity! He is not
a created being, but instead, the creator and sustainer of the universe.
John 1:1-4, 14, 18.
Note v. 17 - "in Him all things consist."
To help us better understand the nature of God, let's examine the following:
God does not have existence - He IS existence.
Exodus 3:14 - God reveals this fact to Moses when He states,
"I Am Who I Am." (I Am Being).
God is un-created and un-originated, having no beginning and owing His existence to no one.
The material universe and all that we see is from the mind of God. He is the source
of plans and thought, the perfect mind - all thoughts and ideas originate with Him. Man
has never created anything. He only discovers what God has already created.
Time, something which in many ways controls our lives, serves God and can be altered by
God. God is not subject to, altered by, or aged by time. He is eternal in nature.
The world (earth) is a very special part of God's creation. The earth was created
as a habitation for mankind. The planet on which we live is the only one suitable for
man's existence. Recent discoveries have shown the earth to be the only planet to host a
life supporting water system. The climates, seasons and atmosphere of the earth are the
only known suitable conditions for life in the universe. God has provided us with
everything we need to grow food, build a road, make an atomic bomb or perform a kidney
transplant. Not only has He created it for us, but, He has also entrusted it to us. We
can destroy ourselves with multi-megaton bombs or preserve life through modern medicine.
The potential for all of man's work and progress already exist. It has already been
provided. Man has only to "discover" what God has already created.
Some significant facts about the earth that might help us understand the Majesty of God:
Diameter - 7918 miles.
Circumference - Approximately 25,000 miles.
Weight - 6.6 sextillion tons (6.6 with 20 zeros)
Square miles - 176,940,000 square miles of land space.
If you could walk 8 city blocks North, 8 West, 8 South and 8 East, you could walk around a square mile.
On an average, if you walked non-stop, walking at 3 mph., you could walk the surface of the earth in 6733 years.
Speed - The earth travels through space at 43,000 mph. while traveling around the sun at a speed of 65,520 mph.
Light is the most significant source of energy in the world.
Light comes from God, not from the sun. God created light on the first day and the sun on the fourth.
Light travels at a speed of 186,282.397 miles per second.
In one year it travels 5,878,499,814,000 miles (almost 6 trillion miles). This distance is known as a light year.
The human body is the most complex and glorious of God's creation. There are many
amazing facts about the human body which demonstrate the Majesty of God.
Human hair was given to us as a covering. It is also one of the most powerful parts
of the body. If the growth power of your head of hair were concentrated into one hair,
it would grow approximately one inch per minute, 120 feet per day, 3600 feet per month
and 8.2 miles per year. The average head of human hair is strong enough to lift a small
The human heart and circulatory system is another amazing part of the body. Your heart,
which is about the size of your fist, pumps 10 pints of blood through 75,000 miles of
vessels to nourish over 300 trillion cells every day, continuously. It accomplishes
this amazing feat for an average of 72 years.
New York's rush hour traffic would look like a slow motion movie compared to you circulatory system.
The Animal Kingdom: Let's look at one aspect of the animal kingdom that you have probably
never noticed. We understand that death is a part of life and that something must die
in order for others to live. In Genesis we are told that God created cattle after their
kind and beast after their kind. These two categories deal with animals that can be
domesticated and those which prey on others. The beast are the predators of the world and
the domestic animals are their prey.
Predators are born helpless and dependent upon their parents for food and protection.
Dogs, cats, lions, tigers, etc. are born with their eyes and ears closed. They
cannot defend themselves.
Their prey are born with the ability to flee from predators soon after birth. Cattle,
sheep, goats, deer, antelope, etc. all stand and are able to run within a few hours
Man, which many classify in the animal kingdom, and also the most vicious predator,
is the most helpless of all newborns.
Our earth is part of a solar system, which is part of a galaxy, which is only a
SMALL part of the universe.
A solar system is a group of planets and their moons which revolve around a star.
Our star is the sun. It represents more than 99% of the total mass of our
Our solar system is a part of the "Milky Way Galaxy." A galaxy is a cluster
of stars. Our galaxy is one of over 10,000 KNOWN galaxies in the universe.
Our solar system revolves around the Milky Way Galaxy once every 225 million years
at a speed of 481,000 mph.
The largest known galaxy is 3C-345. It is 78,000,000 light years across and
5000 light years away. (Do you remember how far a light year is?)
The size of our universe is beyond our comprehension. Modern physics has only begun
to understand the size and power of our universe. The frontier of space travel has
opened many new doors. When we consider that the earth is traveling through space and
around the sun; the earth is spinning on its axis while the moon is spinning on its
axis, while it travels around the earth; the whole solar system is traveling through
space; and the whole process is taking place at speeds and over distances that are
beyond our imagination, then we get a glimpse of just how big, intelligent and powerful
a God we have. And, He is the creator of it all.
We have discussed a number of seemingly unrelated facts. However, they are totally related.
We live on the only known planet suitable for habitation. The chemical structure of the
earth, the interaction of the plant and animal kingdoms, the complexity of living creatures
and the ability of man to think, reason and discover his universe all point to the Majesty
of God. We must also remember the awesome size of it all. It could not have JUST HAPPENED!
It was created by a being so powerful and majestic that we can only look upon Him with awe
