FOLLOW THOU ME
READ: John 21:18-22.
"Follow thou me" - is not a mass invitation but a personal summons.
Follow me would probably indicate a move into the kingdom.
Soon He will commission them along with the other apostles to stay in Jerusalem and wait for the Holy Spirit.
Peter later gave a spiritual application to "follow me".
I Peter 2:21-25
Today, let's notice some spiritual applications to the command "Follow Thou Me".
STAND NOT IN IDLENESS.
To follow Christ, steps must be taken.
Prov. 6:6-11 - the ant.
Idleness breeds corruption - I Tim. 5.
Can't be content with status quo.
Must do more than in the past.
We are the "best" on earth - should be the "busiest" on earth.
Eph. 5:16 - redeeming the time.
TURN NOT ASIDE UNTO WORLDINESS.
Don't let your possessions keep you from serving Christ.
Mark 10:17-22.... rich young ruler.
Possess your possessions - don't let your possessions possess you.
Don't let domestic duties hinder and affect your service.
Matt. 6:24 - no man can serve...
LAG NOT BEHIND IN FEAR.
Peter followed afar off - Luke 22:54
Lied, swore, denied.
John followed near - was secure, not afraid.
We try to put too much distance between us and Jesus.
Walk in boldness.
GO NOT BEFORE CHRIST IN ASSUMPTION.
A follower must not preceed the leader.
Denominationalism exist partially because some want to get ahead of Jesus.
We must have a precept or example from Jesus for the things that we do.
2 John 9 - "Whosoever goeth onward..."
DEPART NOT FROM HIM IN UNBELIEF.
John 6:66-69 - context: "I am the bread of life".
Don't let a lack of understanding cause you to depart from serving Christ.
We must walk by faith - 2 Cor. 5:7.
Study is the key to knowledge, understanding, STRONG faith.
FOLLOW HIM TO THE CROSS.
Rom. 6:2 - "...We who died to sin, how shall we live any longer therein?"
Rom. 6:6 - "knowing this, that our old man was crucified with him, that the body of
sin might be done away, that so we should no longer be in bondage to sin."
FOLLOW HIM TO THE GRAVE.
Rom. 6:4 - "We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death: that like
as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might
walk in newness of life."
FOLLOW HIM INTO A NEWNESS OF LIFE.
Rom. 6:4 - above
I Peter 1:21-23.
Follow him into eternal glory.
