DISCIPLESHIP: WHAT IS A DISCIPLE?
Define Disciple: MATHETES - a learner, (indicates thought with endeavor).
One who follows one's teaching. A disciple was not a pupil but an adherent spoken of as an imitator of his teacher.
John 8:31-32 - the test - (abide).
John 15:7-8 - the test - (fruit bearing).
A disciple is a follower of Christ - John 13:15.
I Peter 2:21 - Jesus left an example to follow.
I John 2:6 - "He that abideth in him ought himself also to walk, even as he walked."
We need to test ourselves to see if we are really disciples of Christ.
Not all who claim to be disciples of Jesus are his disciples.
Matt. 7:21-23 - (followed for the wrong reason).
Today, let's notice seven points to test OUR discipleship for Christ. We want to see if we are really
his disciples or whether we just claim to be.
A DISCIPLE IS A DILIGENT STUDENT OF GOD'S WORD.
A learner from the Master Teacher.
Jesus met sin with Scripture.
Matthew 4:1-11 - (3 times)
II Timothy 2:15 - "study to show..."
Some cannot name the books of the Bible.
If you were asked, could you?
A DISCIPLE IS ONE WHO'S CONVICTIONS ARE FROM THE WORD.
Follow the example of Paul.
II Timothy 1:12.
Follow the example of others:
Acts 4:20 - Peter and John.
Acts 5:29 - Apostles.
A true disciple will show evidence of his convictions in his quest to follow God.
A DISCIPLE IS ONE WHO LIVES WHAT HE PREACHES.
We must live a life of consistency.
Romans 6:4 - we were made to walk a new life, we must walk just that way.
II Corinthians 5:17.
The result of inconsistency:
A DISCIPLE IS AN EXAMPLE BEFORE MEN.
Matthew 5:13-16 - salt and light.
Philippians 2:14-18 - seen as lights in the world.
I Timothy 4:12.
A DISCIPLE IS ONE WHO LOVES FELLOWSHIP.
Jesus was true to the Jewish assemblies.
Luke 4:16 - went into the synagogue on the Sabbath.
The early disciples met together in assemblies.
A DISCIPLE IS ONE WHO SHOWS HIS LOVE BY LIBERALITY.
Giving is one of the most blessed privileges we have.
II Corinthians 8:9.
I Timothy 6:17-19 - riches are uncertain.
Covetousness can never portray discipleship.
If Jesus gave all he had, why can't we as his disciples give all that we have.
A DISCIPLE IS ONE WHO SEEKS TO SAVE THE LOST.
This was Jesus' purpose - Luke 19:10.
If we are His followers we will do the same.
Our commission - Matthew 28:18-20.
Romans 1:16-17 - the Gospel is the power of salvation.
Do you claim to be a disciple of Jesus?
Has your life shown evidence of your discipleship?
