Define: To disown, reject responsibility for.
Matthew 10:33 - "Whosoever shall disown...(deny)..."
Who can deny Jesus?
We all can.
Matthew 12:30 - "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters."
The real question is, How can we deny Him?
In this lesson, let's look at some outright examples of denial in the Bible and see if we can see ourselves in them.
He was a disciple.
He was fairly close to Jesus.
He served with Jesus for three years.
Had a repentant heart.
His action or denial (discuss context).
Notice the progression of sin as a result of his denial.
Maid - "I don't know what you are talking about."
Another maid - he denied with an oath - "I don't know the man."
Those that stood there - "I don't know the man."
He later broke down and cried - Mark 14:72; Luke 22:62 - (see: 61-62).
JUDAS - (HIDDEN, BUT LATER OBVIOUS).
We always think of him as the death betrayer.
He was a disciple.
He was greedy - (as well as the others).
Matthew 26:8 - precious ointment.
What this means is waste.
We could sell it and give to the poor.
Mark 14:4 - shows the indignation over this matter.
His action - (How did he deny Jesus?)
He sought a way to deliver Him.
Our application - (some reasons).
As disciples or followers how do we act?
Do we sell Jesus out for money?
Do we sell Jesus out for a "day off"?
Can a Christian really be "off"?
Do we sell Jesus out for self praise?
Major problem of the world today.
Illustration: "There is no limit to how far a man can go if he doesn't mind who gets the credit."
Do we sell Jesus out for our own feelings or our own way?
THE OTHER TEN DISCIPLES.
Do we run away from Jesus in the face of danger?
In our country we do not have the threat of death for our beliefs.
These men said nothing.
They just left
How strong was their faith?
What had they believed about Jesus' previous teaching?
Peter and John later followed Jesus to the place of His trial.
John 18:15 - (this was before Peter's denial).
Where were the others?
Where would you have been?
PEOPLE OF TODAY.
How do we deny Jesus?
Failure to share Him with others.
Failure to be of assistance to others.
Failure to realize that He is Deity - "GOD".
We don't realize His strength.
Failure to edify our own brethren.
Failure to "put on" Christ.
Do you know that by our denying God, Christ had to die?
Man's disowning God's law and greatness brought sin into the world.
We have mentioned:
Judas - he repented and gave the money back.
Peter - repented and stuck with Jesus.
Other disciples - repented and became great men for Him.
Where do you stand?
What will you do with Jesus?
Have you denied Him in any way?
Have you taken Him at His word?
