The point of John's gospel is that Jesus is Deity.
John introduces this (1:1-18) and gives proof after proof to aid you in your belief of this truth (20:30-31).
The claims that Jesus made have recorded evidence to back them up, but John sees other evidences that further prove this fundamental fact.
The Deity of Jesus is a fundamental belief of Christianity (Matt. 16:13-18).
Today, in this lesson, let's search out these claims of Jesus and see what they prove.
I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE - JOHN 6:35.
Context: Feeding of the 5,000 - John 6:1-14.
They saw Jesus as a great prophet - v. 14.
They followed because of food - v. 26-27.
They were thinking of manna in the wilderness - v. 31.
Jesus relates himself to the manna - v. 32-35.
He is the Bread (sustaining force) from above.
I AM THE LIGHT - JOHN 8:12.
Background: Feast of tabernacles - on the first day of the feast week they lighted a huge
candelabra. The glare could be seen from every courtyard in Jerusalem. Tradition says you
could thread a needle on the outskirts of the city by the light.
This light symbolized the pillar of fire that led the Israelites by night. (Ex. 13:21).
Jesus is our guidance. (v.12).
I Jno. 1:5.
Jesus was claiming the salvation of God was resident in Him.
I AM THE DOOR - JOHN 10:7.
Background: Shepherd would sit in the entrance way - guard sheep.
Jesus is our protection.
I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD - JOHN 10:11.
Good shepherd - Ezk. 34:11-23.
Jesus is our direction.
I AM THE RESURRECTION - JOHN 11:25.
Jesus is our power to live eternally.
John 5:28-29; I Cor. 15:20.
I AM THE WAY, TRUTH, LIFE - JOHN 14:6.
Way - road.
Acts 9:2; 22:4; 24:14,22 - Christians were known as people of the way.
