CHRIST IN YOU, THE HOPE OF GLORY
Many of us today do not understand our hope because we do not understand the work Jesus did while on the earth.
Every action Jesus did while here was for our ultimate redemption.
We often feel that God is against us, therefore, we cannot understand His work.
..."who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth."
In this lesson, let's look at why the statement, "Christ in you, the hope of Glory" is true.
HE IS OUR HOPE FOR DELIVERANCE - Col. 1:13.
It was a common practice for whole populations to be moved into another country after a war.
Example: Northern 10 tribes into Babylon.
Three things to see:
Through Jesus - we are delivered from darkness, ignorance - into the light of knowledge.
In him we learn what to believe and what to do.
Through Jesus - we are delivered from the darkness of sin into the light of holiness.
The power of sin is broken.
Bad men/women can become good.
Jesus is able to rule over the demonic powers.
Col. 2:15 - Jesus broke this power forever.
"In Christ Jesus we are transformed from a devil controlled life into a Christ filled universe."
HE IS OUR HOPE FOR RECONCILIATION TO GOD - Col. 1:20.
Reconciliation - to bring together.
Men once estranged now are reconciled - 1:21-22.
Described as "making peace."
Peace - "right relationship" - (in the Jewish mind).
God says, "Be friends with me again."
It is MAN who must be reconciled to God --- not God to man.
HE IS OUR HOPE FOR REDEMPTION - Col. 1:14.
This was the primary work of Jesus.
I Peter 1:18-19.
Redemption - "liberation at a cost."
God redeemed Israel in Egypt.
Deut. 15:15 - "Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you. That is why I give you this command today."
Deut. 24:18 - "Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you from there. That is why I command you to do this."
Colossians was written in an age of pirates and bandits. Every traveler's family had to stand prepared to pay a ransom.
HE IS OUR HOPE FOR FORGIVENESS - Col. 1:14.
APHESIS - (to the Jew) - refers to the remission of debts; The cancellation of an obligation.
"It is the cancellation of a debt or obligation from a man that might be held over him."
Example: The Year of Jubilee."
(To the Greek) - It was a regular word for remission or exemption from taxes or taxation.
EVERY MAN is un-payably in debt to God, and through the work of Jesus Christ, the debt is remitted and forgiven.
He canceled the bond - 2:14.
Bond - (Gr.) - idea of I.O.U.
A bond entered into which states and acknowledges a debt and makes the payment of such an
obligation. Also it sets forth certain penalties if payment is not duly and completely made.
We are under such an obligation to God in a system of works - 100% is required.
EXALEIPHEIN - "to sponge or wipe off."
Ink had no acid - would wipe off easily.
It made it as though it never happened.
God obliterates the memory of the past.
HE IS OUR HOPE FOR HOPE - Col. 1:5, 27.
Hope for this world.
Sin had men defeated and hopeless.
I Cor. 6:9-11 - (11).
Light was truly brought into darkness.
Hope for the world to come.
Romans 4:25 - "for our sakes he rose again."
I Cor. 15:20 - "first fruits" - promise of a harvest.
Romans 8:11, 23 - our mortal body.
HE IS OUR HOPE FOR A NEW LIFE - Col. 2:10.
A free life - 2:20.
Free from the Law of works.
A clean life - 3:5 - (constant cleansing).
New nature - 3:9-10.
A forward looking life - 3:4.
A totally committed life - 3:17.
Is Christ in you?
Is He your "Hope of Glory?"
Living a new life?
