What are the desirable characteristics of a Christian?
Two ways to define these:
Look for passages that deal with characteristics.
Look at a Christian in the Bible and see what he did and said about him.
Look at a person you know.
The person is Joses.
He is not known well by either name.
What can we learn from the life of this man?
Levite - a religious tribe.
Consolation - (KJV)
Should be exhortation.
29 times the word is used.
8 times exhortation.
With agent exhortation.
With the recipient consolation.
It is not exhortation if it does not give consolation.
Sold land. - Opposite Acts 5:1-11 - Ananias and Saphira.
Acts 2:44 - all things in common.
Belonging equally to several (sharing).
Acts 5 - recognized ownership but not possession.
Backslidden member returns.
Demand coming forward.
Actions driven members away.
Some have been driven away and never come back.
Go to them.
He knew the story of Paul. Why?
Looked for the best in all.
Rejoice in God's grace.
Not like Jonah.
Moped because people repented.
Encouraged them to remain true to the Lord.
Full of the Holy Spirit.
Full of faith.
Did not need the limelight or to be #1.
17 times the two names come together.
9 Barnabas first.
Also saw when he needed help.
V. 1-2 - prophets and teachers.
Work well together here - work elsewhere.
V. 7, 43, 46 - both spoke the same message.
V. 50 - both received persecution.
Stood against falsehood.
V. 2, 25 - loved by several congregations.
V. 36-39 - Sharp disagreement.
Stood up for what he believed was right.
Do not know why Mark returned.
The word "contention" is too tame.
Incite, sharp fit of rage, angry dispute.
Paroxysm - too strong.
Sudden violent emotion or action.
Same word in Heb. 10:24.
Sinner saved by grace.
